Quando o computador é ligado, ele inicia o que é chamado de rotina POST (Power-on selft test). Isto é uma procedimento curto de diagnóstico incorporado na sequência de boot pela produtora da BIOS para fins de verificação de erros e notificações.

Muitas vezes quando há um erro na rotina de boot você receberá uma mensagem de erro na tela, ou seja, foi mostrado pela placa de vídeo. Mas, em alguns casos, o erro é detectado previamente no processo de boot e não pode ser apresentado pela placa de vídeo. O erro pode até mesmo ser causado pela placa de vídeo ou o monitor. Por isso se fizeram necessários os códigos de bipe de erro.

Abaixo uma lista de alguns códigos por produtora de BIOS:

AMI (American Megatrends') BIOS
