Mint Cinnamon lento ao ligar Monitor Externo

Boa noite!
Peguei um netbook velho da minha namorada, que estava largado num canto, pra fazer uma mini central multimídia básica (já o usávamos pra isso com o Win7 que estava instalado nele, mas tava um pé no saco de usar... até que por falta de TV o largamos e começamos a assistir direto no enorme e pesado Vaio dela). O Netbook em questão é um Acer Aspire One D257, equipado com um Atom N570 (vídeo integrado GMA 3150, se não me engano), 2 GB de RAM DDR3 e um teclado morto hahaha (teclas prendendo, tive de desativar aquele treco... Mas como nem será mais usado, não substituirei, vou usar um mini teclado sem fio genérico)

Pois bem, instalei nele o Mint 18.1 Cinnamon, em seguida instalei uns Drivers Adicionais para Intel que apareceu no Gerenciador de Drivers e depois os drivers gráficos através do Intel Graphics Update para Linux. Tudo rodando bonito, VLC abrindo lindamente todo e qualquer filme e tal, fui ligar a uma tela externa pra testar. Eis que aparentemente havia travado, mas não, só ficava ridiculamente lento (do tipo, eu clicava em algo, daqui uns 20 segundos responde, menos o mouse, que nunca fica lento pra mover o ponteiro...).
Fiz várias buscas, tentei ligar o Netbook com a tela conectada nele, conectando depois, buscando possíveis configurações... Nada resolveu. Sempre que ligo a uma tela externa, ele se torna absurdamente lento, impossível de usar.

 

Ah, e ele não tem HDMI, isso é pela VGA.

Alguma sugestão? (espero que tenha sido claro com toda essa história sem fim hehe)

Achei duas coisas que podem ajudar.

Uma é um rapaz que diz que resolveu simplesmente ligando o monitor externo antes de ligar o notebook.

Outra é que em vários fóruns dizem que os drivers de vídeo da intel são antiquados e mais atrapalham mais que ajudam e a performance melhorou muito ao desinstalar:

Parece complicado, mas não é. A parte do inxi é só pra ver se o driver está lá. A parte relevante é abrir um terminal e digitar:

sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-intel. (no fim tem uma instrução de como reverter se a coisa ficou pior)

11. Does your computer have an Intel video card? If it's not too ancient (2008 or newer), then you can probably improve its performance noticeably. Namely by replacing its obsolete and outdated driver (xserver-xorg-video-intel) by a newer one.

That old driver is only present to keep Linux Mint compatible with ancient Intel GPU's of the i8xx and i9xx family of chipsets, but it decreases the performance and stability of newer Intel video chipsets. Also it might be the cause of screen tearing.
Removing it will force your system to use the far better new modesetting driver instead. This modesetting driver is already present in your kernel; removing the obsolete driver will wake it from its sleeping state.
This is how to do it:

a. Launch a terminal window.
(You can launch a terminal window like this: *Click*)

b. Copy/paste the following line into your terminal, in order to check your current graphics card and driver:

inxi -G

(if you type it: note the space after inxi and note that G is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

The output should show an Intel video card, not being of the ancient i8xx or i9xx family of chipsets (i915, i965, etc.). The reported driver should be: intel.

c. Then copy/paste into the terminal:

sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-intel

Press Enter and submit your password. Please note that the password will remain entirely invisible, not even asterisks will show, which is normal.

d. Reboot your computer.

e. Check again with this terminal command (use copy/paste to transfer it to the terminal):

inxi -G

The reported driver should now be: modesetting. Any previous screen tearing should be gone.

Note: Isn't that driver being reported by inxi? Then execute this command in a terminal window (use copy/paste to transfer it):

grep modesetting /var/log/Xorg.0.log

If the last two lines of the output it produces, look roughly similar to the blue lines below, you're probably OK after all:

[      7.302] (II) modesetting: Driver for Modesetting Kernel Drivers: kms
[      7.312] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for modesetting

If they don't, it might be safer to re-install the old driver. For that, see item 6.1 below.

Do you experience any new problems because of this driver switch? Then undo the switch, as described in item 11.1 below.
 

How to undo the Intel video driver switch

11.1. If the driver switch from intel to modesetting causes any problems, then you can always easily undo that switch.

This is how to undo it:

a. Launch a terminal window.
(You can launch a terminal window like this: *Click*)

b. Copy/paste the following line into your terminal, in order to check your current graphics card and driver:

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel

Press Enter. Your password will remain entirely invisible when you type it, not even dots will show, this is normal. Press Enter again.

c. Reboot. All should be like it was.

@Arutha Ambos não funcionaram! Pior, o Mint não iniciou mais... Mas agradeço mesmo assim!
Como tava levando um pau pra tentar reverter e como no mesmo dia descobri o tal Ubuntu Minimal, resolvi tentá-lo...

Instalei o Ubuntu Minimal com LXDE, os drivers de vídeo, VLC e Firefox... Agora no Netbook funciona perfeito na TV (só preciso mudar manualmente uma configuração quando for começar a usar na TV (já deixei um atalho pra isso, só vou mexer quando for começar a usar, pois estou esperando vir um adaptador RCA para a TV por a TV onde ele será usado não ter essa entrada...), roda perfeitamente filmes em Full HD, só tá apanhando um pouco ainda pra ver vídeos acima de 480p no YouTube, com o vídeo indo bonito até essa resolução e travando bastante acima dessa (mas acho que já estarei desvirtuando o tópico daí, não?).
